An EPFL Life Sciences graduate working in business analytics for a pharmaceutical, Xavier discovered a passion for data science.

Surprising considering maths had not been his favourite subject at school. But he enjoyed communicating data while increasingly being drawn to digital transformation. He’s now eight years into a career as a data scientist, working in different industries. He’s trained hundreds of people along the way, including at the EPFL Extension School, where he enjoys tailoring each learner’s instruction to their previous experience. The 1-1 support to learners is what he likes the most. He describes Applied Data Science: Communication & Visualization as a toolbox enabling anyone to tell ‘data stories’. If you cannot communicate data, especially to non-technical people, numbers become meaningless, he says. And in a world increasingly consumed by data, that ability is key to success.

The Applied Data Science: Communication & Visualization program includes four certified courses and a customizable capstone project. Learners who successfully complete the program earn an EPFL Certificate of Open Studies Diploma and 15 ECTS credits.

01. Basic Data Science Reports: Back to the tidyverse, ggplot2 and Rmarkdown
  • Getting ready with R and RStudio
  • Data wrangling with the tidyverse
  • Introduction to data visualization and the grammar of graphics

04. Customized Dashboards
  • Best practices in Shiny app architecture

05. Capstone Project

Showcase all the data visualization and communication skills and knowledge you’ve learned on the program by building your own multi-page dashboard.

Prerequisites

This program is taught at intermediate-level. You should have the following tools, skills and abilities prior to registering for this course:

  • English at B2 level
  • A computer with a webcam, microphone and a minimum internet connection of 2Mbps download / 512kbps upload, enabling you to stream videos with sound and to effectively participate in video chats
  • Understanding of data wrangling
  • Prior experience with any programming language
